About Counselling

How can counselling help?
Counselling provides an opportunity for us to communicate our experiences, thoughts and feelings in the presence an experienced, compassionate professional. Fresh perspectives and feedback can help us address problems in new ways.

What should you expect from a counsellor/therapist?
You should be able to expect that you will be listened to with compassion, understanding and respect, with the counsellor adding some reflections on what you are saying. While a counsellor may help you to explore possible decisions, you are to be respected as the expert on your personal experience.

How does short term counselling differ from longer therapy?
In shorter term counselling, the counsellor will likely focus on your immediate concerns and help you define a preferred alternative. Parts of this process include gaining an understanding of a problem, exploring the outcomes of possible actions, and evaluating how different choices align with your values and priorities.

In a longer term therapy, you may explore connections between experiences from earlier in life and present-day concerns. This kind of therapy can be valuable to people seeking to understand, and change, long-standing patterns linked to feelings of distress.

Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a therapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission.

However, there are number of exceptions to this rule.
Exceptions include:
Suspected abuse of a child, dependant adult or elder.
If a client threatens serious bodily harm to another person.
If a client intends to harm himself or herself.
